Pare Tribe Beliefs & Cultural Warnings

Though they may not live directly on Kilimanjaro’s slopes like the Chagga, the Pare revere the mountain and often include it in rituals for rain, fertility, and healing. They also have their own smaller sacred mountains within Pare land where traditional offerings and ceremonies are performed.
 
Like the Chagga, the Pare believe that disrupting sacred customs can lead to personal or communal misfortunes. In particular, they share the warning about never pointing at the Kilimanjaro summit during rituals, as this is seen as a sacred insult to spirits and can result in drought or hardship.
 
A unique aspect of Pare tradition is their initiation ceremonies for youth. Young men and women are taken deep into the forest by elders to be taught tribal knowledge, laws, and ancestral rituals. If a family refuses to send their children or skips these rites, the consequences can be spiritual.
